AMMAN –– Over 300 companies from 25 countries are scheduled to take part in the “Project Near East” international construction exhibition, which will start next Monday.

According to its organisers, International Fairs and Promotions (IFP), the event will feature various sectors including construction and building materials, heavy equipment, electrical engineering, water and agriculture, environment technologies, and infrastructure products.

At a press conference to announce that preparations for the exhibition have been completed, IFP Director General Hamad Khalil indicated that China will be the largest participating country, with 52 companies scheduled to participate, adding that 28 Italian companies and over 20 firms from Turkey will also be represented.

He explained that Kuwait will lead the Arab countries in participation, with 19 companies represented, and urged Jordanian businesspeople, engineers and contractors to visit the fair to benefit from its international exposure.

Mario Mariani, the trade commissioner at the Italian embassy in Amman, said the Italian pavilion will be the largest for a European Union country, adding that Italian firms will be eyeing the Iraqi market and ways to enter it through Jordan, which he described as a gate to neighbouring countries.

He noted that Italy is the largest supplier for the Iraqi market among EU countries, indicating that the fair will include workshops to discuss joint Jordanian-Italian investments.

Yanal Hactaf, the deputy commercial counsellor at the Turkish embassy, remarked that the Turkish government is working to increase its trade volume with countries in the region by using the strategic location of Jordan as a base from which to penetrate other markets.

“We have good commercial cooperation with Jordan and both countries recently signed a free trade agreement,” he noted, explaining that Turkish businesspeople see the Kingdom as a safe place to operate in the region and enter its markets.

Also at the press conference, a Chinese official stated that China is aiming to enter the Jordanian market not only through conventional consumer goods, but also through heavy machineries and by taking part in real estate and construction projects.

Ma Jianchun, economic and commercial counsellor at China’s embassy in Amman, noted that trade exchange between Jordan and China grew by 39 per cent in 2009 to reach $2 billion for the first time, adding that Jordanian exports to China increased last year, particularly during the first six months.

According to organisers, over 7,000 people visited the exhibition last year, including both Jordanians and foreigners.

The three-day event, which will be named “Project Jordan” next year, will be held at the Amman Exhibitions Park on the Airport Road between May 3 and 6, Khalil said, adding that a conference on renewable energy will also be held on the sidelines of the exhibition.
