News – Jordan Could Sign Final Contract with Rosatom for Construction of Nuclear Power Plant until End of 2017

Until the end of 2017, Jordan intends to sign a contract with Rosatom for the construction of the first nuclear power plant. Now the parties are dealing with the pre-investment phase and the analysis of the economics of the project.

In the autumn of 2015, the head of the Atomic Energy Commission of Jordan, Mr. Toukan, said that Chinese banks may take part in the project financing providing it with 50% and getting a participatory interest of about 30%. On 5th December 2014 Mr. Medvedev approved the project about the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan.

The overall volume of investment in the project will comprise about 10 billion US dollars. The first plant unit of the nuclear power plant will be put into operation in 2024; the second plant unit will become operational in 2026. The nuclear power plant in Jordan will consist of two power-generating units with capacity of 1000 megawatt each, so the total capacity of the nuclear power plant will be 2,000 megawatt.

On 29^th October 2013 Russia won the nuclear power plant construction tender, which was issued in January 2011. In September 2014, the subsidiary company of Rosatom called Rusatom Overseas signed an agreement for the project development to construct the first nuclear power plant in Jordan within the framework of the 58th Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency. In April 2014 it was announced that the bilateral agreement for the construction of the nuclear power plant would be ready by the summer of 2014. At that time it was supposed that the construction would start in 2020. However, the start-up time was rescheduled due to the fact that the financing scheme has not been determined yet.
