By 2025, nuclear power plants provide nearly half of Jordan’s electricity needs

By 2025, thanks to the Jordan Atomic Energy will produce 48% of the required electricity. This was stated by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour at the opening of the International Energy Summit in Jordan.

The Prime Minister also noted that Jordan is implementing a number of solar and wind energy projects worth US $ 1.6 billion and a total capacity of 1,000 MW, of which 500 MW will be connected to the network before the end of this year. During the summit, Jordan has signed several agreements: in the field of oil, gas, exchange of experience and training with Algeria, an agreement between the company and the Energy NEPCO Jerusalem to provide electricity to Jericho, as well as an agreement with Al Manaseer Group on exploration of copper deposits in southern Jordan.

Under the deal, and the memorandum signed with Algeria, in September of this year the country will start to deliver to Jordan liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, Energy Minister of Algeria Salah Hebri said.

Jordan also pee agreement with the Jordanian-Egyptian Fajr company, specializing in the transportation and supply of natural gas, the security of natural gas industry Jordan. Tariq al-Mula, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, said that by 2021 Egypt expects to resume natural gas exports to Jordan.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ibrahim Saif said that the decline in crude oil prices in 2015 helped to reduce the country’s energy costs by up to JD2.5 billion, representing about 10% of GDP.

“This is a significant reduction compared to the cost for 2014, which reached JD4.5 billion and accounted for 18% of GDP”, – said Saif.

Regarding plans for the expansion of network capacity, the minister said that the demand for electricity is growing annually by about 6.5%.

The Minister added that in 2018 is expected to more projects in oil production will be launched from oil shale and electricity generation based on them. Saif also spoke about the plans of Jordan in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
