Kirienko: business plan of NPP in Jordan to be prepared by 2017

Russia and Jordan are to finish their joint work as part of the agreement on the pre-investment stage of the first Jordan nuclear power plant construction project with the participation of Russia till the end of 2016. According to Kirienko, the Director General of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, after that ​​a concrete decision on the participation of the investors in the project is going to be made.

He noted that at present the preparatory activities for the realization of the NPP construction project are in rapid progress. In particular, Kirienko mentioned that the site for the future plant has already been chosen as well as NPP water supply questions have been solved.

‘We are implementing a two-year program on the preparation of the feasibility study and the entire infrastructure for the future NPP’, – added the Director General of Rosatom.

Kirienko noted that a business plan will have been prepared by the end of 2016 and the investors, who are interested in taking part in the construction of the NPP, will be able to make their decisions. ‘After that we are going to proceed directly to the construction of the NPP together with our Jordanian partners,’ – said Kirienko.

He added that the Government of Jordan ‘adheres to a very reasonable position’ and does not impose any restrictions on the participation of investors in the project. It was reported by Khaled Toukan, the Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission Earlier, that some Chinese investors were interested in participating in that project.

In the autumn of 2013 Russia won the tender for construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan. In September 2014 Rusatom Overseas and the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission signed the Agreement on development of the first power plant construction project in Jordan. In March 2015 the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan entered into the Intergovernmental Agreement on cooperation in construction and operation of the first nuclear power plant on the territory of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The document determines the legal base for the construction of the NPP with the participation of Russia.
