Gov’t considering plan to merge ministries

By Khaled Neimat

AMMAN - As part of an ongoing study, the government is looking into the option of merging the ministries of political development and parliamentary affairs, a senior official said on Wednesday.

“The decision in this regard has not been taken yet,” Minister of Political Development Musa Maaytah told The Jordan Times yesterday.

He dismissed as baseless reports that the government intends to abolish the Ministry of Political Development. However, he said, there is a plan, pending the final decision, to merge the two ministries.

This plan is part of the government’s overall restructuring programme, Maaytah added.

The new entity will be named Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Civil Society, and will have the same responsibilities as the Political Development Ministry, the minister said.

Also, under the draft political parties law, the government is studying a proposal to shift the jurisdiction over political parties from the Ministry of Interior to the Ministry of Political Development.

Earlier this year, the government announced a restructuring plan to address imbalances in the salaries and allowances of civil servants and the staff of independent public institutions, as well as the pension system for those who are still working in the public sector.

The plan also aims to reduce the number of public sector institutions, particularly independent agencies, as part of an overall strategy to reduce current expenditures.
