For economic progress

His Majesty King Abdullah met recently with some businesses community leaders to gauge how they feel about the economy, and what could be done to stimulate it.

The usual suggestions were made: reducing compulsory bank reserves, improving border crossing procedures, making optimum use by Iraq of Aqaba Port, expanding free zone areas and reducing corporate taxes.

Being businesspeople, it perhaps is understandable that they should not consider the political dimension as a priority, but the centrality of the political stability in the country should never be forgotten.

A politically stable country is a sine qua non for consumer and business confidence, the cornerstone for economic progress.

Without security and stability, based on democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights across the board, no economy can attract investment or thrive by leaps and bounds, as we all want ours to perform.

Regional security and stability is also very critical, since what goes beyond the borders of a country has a great impact on all its neighbours. Jordan knows this fact better than many. And, again, the regional peace and security need to see the democracy, respect for the law and for human rights prevail.

Jordan is moving fast in that direction. Some countries of the region have also started progress on this path, and this is important since no amount of “business” effort alone can help achieve economic growth.

A politically stable Middle East- in its entirety – can only benefit all its citizens. A more powerful incentive would be difficult to come by.
