‘Kingdom will remain tolerant, open-minded’

AMMAN (JT) – His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday said nothing will change Jordan’s policy of openness and tolerance, culture of pluralism and acceptance of all constructive and candid views, noting that these are Jordanian constants that do not change.

During a meeting with heads and members of the executive, legislative and judicial authorities, the King stressed the importance of expediting the reform process and making progress towards development.

In his address, he said: “Reform is our unwavering will. Our commitment to it stems from our conviction that it is in the interest of our people because reform means development and keeping up with the spirit of the age.”

His Majesty added that the government is expected to present its recommendations concerning the comprehensive dialogue he has directed the new Cabinet to launch to achieve consensus over political reform.

“I am waiting for the government to present its recommendations on the mechanisms through which comprehensive dialogue will be conducted to discuss all the steps that must be taken to achieve political development,” he said.

“The most important step is to study and develop all laws governing political and civil activities, particularly the Elections Law,” he told his audience of Royal family members, lawmakers, jurists, officials and others.

King Abdullah underlined the importance of consensus on the law and on its goals so that competition for parliamentary seats will take place among parties and on the basis of their programmes.

“There should be consensus on this law and on its goals, which must encourage collective political work and the emergence of political parties as well as increasing public participation in decision making,” he told the members of three authorities.

“The objective is that competition for Parliament takes place among parties and on the basis of programmes. This is essential so that we move to a new stage in the administration of the state,” he added.

The King underlined the need to launch a comprehensive dialogue.

He said: “Citizens are capable of dealing with all challenges if there are frankness and transparency, and if they are informed of what the state is doing to serve them and achieve progress, from which the people should benefit.”

The King emphasised that Jordanians are capable of shouldering their responsibilities and are well aware that their interests, security, dignity and future are above any other consideration.

“I know Jordanians. I know their wisdom, I know their sense of belonging and commitment to their country and its well-being,” he said.

“God willing, they will continue to hold their heads high and Jordan will always stand tall with dignity.”
