Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi

On January 19, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan Ayman Safadi in New York.

The two officials conducted a detailed exchange of opinions on the situation in the Middle East in the context of the persisting explosive potential for domestic conflicts and terrorist threats that continue to destabilise regional and international security.

In this context, they focused on Syrian developments and reaffirmed their principled support for the Syrian Arab Republic’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. They also noted that there was no alternative to a political settlement through all-inclusive intra-Syrian dialogue on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. In this connection, they noted the importance of holding the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, active preparations for which are currently underway.

While discussing the current status of the Middle East peace settlement, they confirmed their commitment to resolving the Palestinian issue under a two-state concept and on the generally recognised international-law basis and noted the imperative need for resuming the negotiating process as soon as possible. The sides noted the unacceptability of escalating the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation, including that in East Jerusalem, caused by the US administration’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The ministers also touched upon the most topical issues of bilateral Russia-Jordan relations.
