Russia and Jordan can sign a contract for nuclear power plant within two years

RIA Novosti / According to Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, Khaled Toukan, a package contract for construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan may be signed by Russia and Jordan within two years.

‘I hope that it will take no more than two years to sign the package contract,’ – said Toucan.

Under the package contract is meant a contract which includes engineering, design and construction works.

Toukan noted that at the moment environmental and engineering surveys are being carried out on the site where the nuclear power plant is going to be constructed. Also he added that the Jordanian side and the Russian company Atomstroyexport have already concluded an agreement that Russian specialists will work out a water-supply project for the nuclear power plant.

In autumn of 2013 Russia won the tender for construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan. In September 2014 the company Rusatom Overseas signed with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission an agreement on the construction development project of the first Jordanian nuclear power plant.

In March 2015 Russia and Jordan signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the area of construction of the first nuclear power plant in Jordan. This agreement provides a legal framework for the construction of the plant and Russia’s participation in it.

It is expected that this project will be the largest in the history of the bilateral relations. It stipulates a record volume of investment which is 10 billion dollars. The first power generating unit is planned to be launched in 2024, the second one in 2026.
