Royal Decree orders holding elections

AMMAN (JT) –– A Royal Decree was issued on Tuesday to hold parliamentary elections according to the provisions of law. According to Paragraph 1 of Article 34 of the Constitution, the King issues directive for holding Lower House elections in the manner described in the relative law and related bylaws.

Last week, a Royal Decree was issued endorsing the temporary Elections Law for 2010, which adopted measures to ensure free and fair elections and maintained the one-person, one-vote system.

Designated international organisations as well as the National Centre for Human Rights and concerned local NGOs will be allowed to “witness” the forthcoming parliamentary elections slated before year-end, according to the government.

The Cabinet also introduced a new distribution of constituencies by dividing main districts within governorates into sub-districts.

According to the new law, the number of Lower House seats has been increased from 110 to 120, encompassing 108 smaller electoral districts, plus 12 seats reserved for the women’s quota, up from six.

The electoral districts bylaw that was endorsed by a Royal Decree last Thursday, divided the Kingdom into 45 main districts.

Each electoral district will comprise sub-districts equal to the number of seats allocated for the main constituency. Each candidate will be confined to nominate themselves to one sub-district, but voters within the main constituency can vote in any of the smaller units within the district.
