Jordan: some foreign trade indicators I quarter of 2016

In the first quarter of this year, the value of imports of crude oil and its derivatives Jordan dropped by 22% compared with the same period last year, according to the Department of Statistics.

The cost of energy imports in the first quarter of this year amounted JOD495 million against JOD634,3 million in the first quarter of last year. In the current period on energy imports accounted for about 14% of the total imports of the kingdom, which reached JOD3,5 billion. In the first quarter of last year energy imports amounted to 19% of the total imports into the kingdom JOD3,4 billion.

The volume of imports of crude oil kingdom in the first quarter of 2016 amounted to about JOD106,6 million compared to JOD253,2 million in the first quarter of last year – a decline of 58%.

Imports of diesel fuel for the same period decreased by about 63.6% and amounted to JOD77,4 million against JOD212,9 million for the same period last year.

In the first quarter of this year, the kingdom is not imported industrial fuel, and in the same period last year, its imports were estimated at JOD70 million.

On the other hand, in the first quarter of this year, the cost of gasoline imports increased by 43.8% and reached JOD62,3 million against JOD43,3 million for the same period last year.

The cost of imported petroleum gases kingdom, which including liquefied, increased by 376.9% and reached approximately JOD227,5 million compared to JOD47,7 million in the first quarter of last year. In the first quarter of this year, imports of natural gas amounted to approximately JOD8,9 million. The value of imports of electricity was about JOD3,5 million, against JOD8,8 million in the first quarter of last year.

In the first quarter of this year, trade deficit balance the Kingdom increased by 13% compared to the same period of 2015 and reached JOD2376,3 million. The coverage ratio of exports to imports decreased by 5.4% and amounted to 32.8%, compared to 38.2 % over the same period of 2015.

The total value of exports amounted JOD1161,5 million in the first quarter of this year, which is 10.7% less compared to the same period last year. At the same time the national exports had JOD955,3 million, which is 12.7% less than the same period last year. The cost of re-exports – JOD206,2 million, which is 0.1% less than in the first quarter of 2015. The total value of imports in the first quarter of this year amounted JOD3537,8 million, which is 4% more than in the same period last year.

As for the main products, the export value of pharmaceutical products increased by 13.9%, and the raw phosphates – by 3.5%. At the same time decreased the value of exports of clothing and accessories by 3.7%, the potassium salt – 47.3%, fruit and vegetables – by 44.1%, fertilizers – by 46.5%.

Regarding the individual articles of import: increased imports of cars, motorcycles and spare parts by 20.2%, machinery and electrical equipment – by 45.9%, cereals – by 263.8%. This reduced the cost of crude oil and petroleum products imports by 22%, machinery and machine tools – by 16.7%, iron and products from it – by 3.8%.

Jordan Key partners in foreign trade. The cost of the country’s exports to the countries of the North American free trade area increased by 1.3%, including a 0.4% increase exports to the US. At the same time 14.1% decreased the national exports to the Arab Free Trade Area, including 2.5% in Saudi Arabia, 32.5% – in non-Arab Asian countries, including 27.5% India, by 24.9% in the EU, including 25% in Italy.

Imports from the North American Free Trade Area increased by 15.4%, including 11.2% from the United States. It grew by 1.1% imports from non-Arab Asian countries, including China by 5.1%, from the EU – 36.9%, including 872.7% in Romania. The cost of imports from the Arab free trade zone fell to 27.7%, including 38.8% from Saudi Arabia.

With regard to trade with the GCC, the value of imports from these countries amounted JOD567,3 million, or 16% of total imports in the first quarter of this year. Total exports to these countries amounted to JOD317,9 million or 27.4% of the total export volume of the first quarter of 2016.
